UK Newsletter | September 2023

NEWSLETTER: I’m feeling positive about the focus of UK regulation this month. The FCA is looking to protect consumers at all stages of life. Cinema advertising has been added to its toolbox to warn of ill-considered investments while it has also sharpened financial promotions rules around crypto currencies.

The review of later life mortgages has triggered improvements in the advice process to better protect potentially vulnerable customers. And the PRA and FCA has published a joint consultation on Diversity and Inclusion looking at wide reaching improvements for employees, consumers and markets alike.

Also heartening is the impact of fundraising from our industry. We’re proud to support the annual Grouse and Grapes Luncheon next month for Cure Parkinson’s – a small charity who are really redefining research into the disease and for whom the funds raised make a huge difference. It’s also a great opportunity for networking at the stunning Spencer House. We hope to see some of you there.

The Consumer Duty deadline may have passed but there is still much to do. We looked at how best to embed the Duty in our webinar this week – a recording of which is now available, and a new article this month looks more closely at the Duty in fund management. Don’t forget you can dip into our Consumer Duty resource library for other articles and videos.

Also, this month we look at how to get your CASS audit right. We also review the FCA’s latest Dear CEO letter to wholesale banks which pulls no punches reminding CEOs of their own responsibilities under SMCR. And following the FCA’s much publicised look at PEPs, we consider what firms can be doing to review their own processes.

Finally, I’m looking forward to the launch of our new NEDs Forum. Our first event, on 11 October will look at areas like Consumer Duty and remuneration from the Non-Exec Director’s perspective – as well as providing plenty of time for drinks and networking. If you know anyone who might be interested, get in touch.
